Work visas allow people to live and work in New Zealand on a temporary basis, usually where they have a job offer or meet a specific skill or purpose requirement. The applicable visa depends on the role, employer, and duration of the work, with each category having its own eligibility criteria and conditions. Work visa applications often require careful alignment between the role, the applicant’s skills and experience, and Immigration New Zealand’s requirements.

ACCREDITED EMPLOYER WORK VISA

The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is New Zealand’s main temporary work visa for people who have a job offer from an accredited employer. It allows you to work in New Zealand for that employer, usually for up to 5 years, depending on the role and skill level. To be eligible, you must have a full‑time job offer (at least 30 hours per week), meet the required skills or experience for the role, and satisfy pay, health, character, and (in some cases) English language requirements, with the visa generally linking you to the specific employer and job.

Specific Purpose

A Specific Purpose Work Visa allows people to come to New Zealand to work for a clearly defined purpose or event, for a limited period of time. This can include short‑term assignments such as business secondments, specialist installations, or participation in events, where the work has a clear end date. The visa is granted only for the time needed to complete that purpose, and the holder is restricted to the specific role or activity approved, with standard health, character, and genuine intention requirements applying

Religious Worker

A Religious Worker Visa allows people to come to New Zealand to undertake religious work for an approved religious organisation. Applicants must have at least 2 years of relevant religious training or experience and be sponsored by a recognised organisation registered as a charity, with a genuine offer of religious work. The visa is typically granted for up to 2 years and allows the holder to carry out roles such as leading worship, pastoral care, or religious teaching, with standard health and character requirements applying.
